One thing to get right first: 2×2 inches is the overseas size. Applying inside India through Passport Seva uses a different 35×45 mm photo, so prepare the size your application asks for.

“India passport photo” covers two different sizes, and picking the wrong one is the most common mistake:

• Overseas / NRI route (this page). Applying from abroad through VFS Global or an Indian embassy or consulate, the photo is 2×2 inches (51×51 mm) — the same square size as a US passport photo — on a plain white background.
• Domestic route (inside India). Applying through Passport Seva in India uses a 35×45 mm photo instead.

Check your photo against this checklist before you print. These are the requirements VFS Global and the Indian mission publish for the overseas route:

• 2×2 inches (51×51 mm) — a colour photo, square.
• Plain white background — pure white, with no distracting shadows on your face or the background.
• Head 25–35 mm — about 1 to 1-3/8 inch, measured from the top of your hair to the bottom of your chin, with your head centred in the frame.
• Full face, front view, eyes open — look straight at the camera with a natural expression.
• Taken within the last 6 months — one that still looks like you.
• Two identical prints — the overseas application asks for two matching photographs.
• Glasses — no tinted or dark glasses; avoid glare and keep your eyes clearly visible.
• Head coverings — permitted only for religious reasons, and your face from chin to forehead and both edges of the face must stay clearly shown.
• Unaltered — the photograph must not be retouched, enhanced or softened.

The overseas route needs two different photos — this catches many applicants out:

• An old photo or an exaggerated expression. Keep a natural expression with your eyes open, and use a photo from the last six months.
