Malaysia Passport Photo: Taken at the Passport Counter, Not Uploaded

When you apply for a Malaysian passport, your photo is taken on the spot by an immigration officer using a Facial Live Capture device — there is no printed or digital photo for you to bring, upload, or prepare beforehand. Because of that, IDPhotoBy does not prepare photos for this document: there is no applicant-supplied photo in this process for us to format. The Immigration Department of Malaysia (Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia, imi.gov.my) states on its Malaysian International Passport page:

"Photos will be taken at the passport division using a Facial Live Capture device."

This is the standard process for the general passport application — and it's not limited to counters inside Malaysia. The Malaysian High Commission in London's own passport-renewal requirements (kln.gov.my) list a 'Live image' as required for every applicant above 4 years old, confirming the same live-capture process applies at Malaysian missions overseas too. Either way, the photo is captured by immigration staff during your appointment — it isn't something you submit in advance, and it isn't something an online tool can do for you.

You may come across websites offering to "create" or "generate" a Malaysia passport photo online. Whatever file they produce, it isn't part of the process described above — the Immigration Department captures the photo itself, at the counter, so a photo made elsewhere has nowhere to be submitted for this document.

Based on the Immigration Department's own published rules:

• You apply at any Immigration Office in Malaysia, or at a Malaysian Diplomatic Mission overseas.
• An officer photographs you on the spot with a Facial Live Capture device — no printed or digital photo needed from you.
• Contact lenses and spectacles/eyeglasses are not permitted during the capture session.
• Hats and other headwear are not allowed; if you wear a hijab, your forehead and face must stay fully visible and your hair must not cover your face.
• The face-size guideline the Department follows is 25–30 mm (50–60% of the photo), per ICAO standards — that's set by the officer's equipment, not something you need to measure yourself.

General preparation tips (not official rules, just common sense for any counter photo): get a good night's sleep, and wear what you'd want to be identified in for the next several years — the lighting, framing and background are all handled by the Department's own equipment, not by you.

One narrow exception: first-time applicants under 4 years old bring a printed photo instead of using the live-capture device — "One (1) piece of photo measuring 35mm x 50mm with a shadowless WHITE background," confirmed independently by the London mission's own table ('Instant photo' = 'Yes (below 4 yrs: 2 photos, white background)'). If that's your case, that printed photo is arranged directly with the application — it's outside this catalog entry, and not something IDPhotoBy prepares either.
