Free China Passport Photo Online — Make a 33×48 mm Print

Need a China passport photo? For a PRC ordinary passport the photo is 33×48 mm — a recent colour photo on a plain white background. Upload a recent portrait with the tool on this page and IDPhotoBy sizes and crops it to that standard. It is free — no payment required.

One thing to get right first: this is the passport photo. A Chinese visa photo is a different application — if you are applying for a visa, follow the visa requirements, not this page.

These are the requirements Chinese embassies and consulates publish. Check your photo against this list before you print:

• 33×48 mm — a recent colour photo, 33 mm wide by 48 mm high.
• Plain white background — with no shadows on your face or on the background.
• Head size and position — head width 15–22 mm and head height 28–33 mm from the chin to the crown, centred in the frame, with 3–5 mm of space above the head and at least 7 mm from below the chin to the bottom edge.
• Full front view, natural expression — face the camera squarely with both eyes open, lips closed, and all your facial features clearly visible.
• Taken within the last 6 months — one that still looks like you.
• Dark clothing — wear dark-coloured clothing that contrasts with the white background.
• Glasses — removing glasses is recommended. Some Chinese missions do not allow glasses at all; where they are permitted, the lenses must be colourless and no frame, glare or shadow may obscure your eyes.
• No hat or headscarf — unless worn for religious reasons, and then it must not cover your face.
• Unaltered — the photo must not be edited or retouched.

The China passport photo size is 33×48 mm — 33 mm wide and 48 mm high, with your head 28–33 mm from the chin to the crown and centred in the frame. There are two routes, and they use the photo differently:

• In person (counter or by mail). You submit a printed 33×48 mm photo — usually two identical prints, developed at a photo studio or printed on professional photo paper (a home inkjet print on plain paper is not accepted). This is the photo IDPhotoBy makes.
• Online renewal or re-issue. For eligible cases you can apply through the National Immigration Administration government service platform (国家移民管理局政务服务平台) or the China Consular app, where you upload a digital photo that meets China's entry-exit digital-photo standard instead of a paper print.

The online channel has its own on-screen photo specification, so if you are renewing online, follow the rules the portal shows you at upload. IDPhotoBy prepares the 33×48 mm print.

You do not have to go to a photo studio. As long as the photo meets the requirements, a self-prepared photo is accepted — ordinary drugstore white-background passport photos (for example from Walgreens, CVS or Costco) are accepted at the counter, and Chinese consular offices generally do not offer a photo service on site.

What China does not accept is a shortcut: no phone selfies, no re-photographed prints (a photo of a photo) and no edited, retouched or composite/synthesised images. • Using the visa photo guidance. A Chinese visa photo is a different application — for a passport use the 33×48 mm requirements.
• A grey, off-white or busy background. The passport photo needs a plain white background with no shadows.
• A phone selfie or a photo of a photo. Phone selfies and re-photographed prints are not accepted — use a proper front-facing photo.
• Editing or “beautifying” the photo. The photo must be unaltered — use a straight, unretouched portrait.
• Printing on plain paper at home. The print has to be developed at a photo studio or on professional photo paper.
• An old photo. Use one taken within the last 6 months.

Requirements can change — check your Chinese embassy or consulate's current photo instructions and the National Immigration Administration passport portal before you submit; they are the final authority.
