Our photos meet international government standards.

Need a China visa photo? For a Chinese visa application, the photo is 33×48 mm — a recent color photo on a plain white background. Upload a recent photo with the tool on this page and IDPhotoBy sizes and crops it to that standard. You don't need a separate Chinese visa photo app — do it right here.

One thing to get right first: this is the visa photo. A Chinese passport is a different document with its own requirements page — if you need a passport photo, use that page instead of this one.

China visa photo requirements (33×48 mm, white background)

These are the Chinese visa photo requirements published for the print channel. Check your photo against this list:

  • 33×48 mm — a recent color photo, 33 mm wide by 48 mm high.
  • Plain white background — no border and no scenic or lifestyle backdrop.
  • Head size and position — head width 15–22 mm and head height 28–33 mm from the chin to the crown, with 3–5 mm of space above the head and at least 7 mm from below the chin to the bottom edge of the photo.
  • Full front view, natural expression — face the camera directly, both eyes open, lips closed, ears visible, no obvious deformity.
  • Face rotation — no more than 20 degrees left or right, and no more than 25 degrees up or down.
  • Taken within the last 6 months — a photo that still looks like you.
  • Glasses — no thick frames, tints or reflective lenses.
  • No hat or headscarf — unless worn for religious reasons, and even then it must not cover the face.
  • Undamaged and unretouched — evenly lit, with natural skin tone and no red-eye.

China visa photo size: 33×48 mm

The China visa photo size is 33×48 mm — 33 mm wide and 48 mm high, with your head 28–33 mm from the chin to the crown, centered in the frame. IDPhotoBy sets the crop to those measurements and outputs a print-quality 33×48 mm file, plus a printable sheet you can take to a photo shop or print on photo paper.

Print or online: the two ways to submit a China visa photo

There are two routes, and they use the photo differently:

  • In person or by mail (visa center, embassy or consulate). You submit a printed 33×48 mm photo pasted onto the paper application form — you can print it at home or at a photo shop, using the printable sheet IDPhotoBy generates for you. This is the print IDPhotoBy prepares for you.
  • Online application. The China Visa Application Service Center's online system accepts a digital photo file that meets its own on-screen pixel and file-size specification, instead of a paper print.

The online channel shows its own photo specification at upload, so if you are applying online, follow the pixel size and file rules the portal displays. IDPhotoBy prepares the 33×48 mm print — for extra print copies of it, the printable sheet lays out several on one page with cut-mark guides.

China visa photo vs. China passport photo — not the same document

A Chinese visa is issued to a foreign national so they can enter China; a Chinese passport is a Chinese citizen's own travel document — two different applications, with two different forms. Both are administered separately and are not interchangeable: this page is for the visa photo. If you need a passport photo, use our China passport photo page instead — it has its own requirements and its own upload flow.

How to make a China visa photo online

  • Upload a recent, well-lit photo with the tool on this page — the China Visa document is already selected.
  • IDPhotoBy resizes and crops your photo to 33×48 mm with your head 28–33 mm from chin to crown, and makes sure it sits on the plain white background the requirements ask for.
  • Preview the result — check the size, the head position, the plain white background and a natural expression.
  • Download the finished photo and use the printable sheet to print it on photo paper or at a photo shop.

The China visa photo maker also works as a size checker and resizer for a 33×48 mm photo you already have. The printable sheet is designed for exactly that — printing it yourself, at home or at a photo shop.

What IDPhotoBy changes — and what it never touches

IDPhotoBy sizes and crops the photo you upload to 33×48 mm and makes sure it sits on the plain white background the requirements ask for. It does not retouch, beautify or otherwise edit your face — the photo must be undamaged and unretouched, so your features are left exactly as they are.

We also make no acceptance promise — no tool can promise a visa photo will be accepted. The file is prepared to the published 33×48 mm requirements, and the Chinese mission or visa center decides.

Common China visa photo mistakes to avoid

  • Using the passport photo guidance. A Chinese passport is a different document — for a visa use this page's requirements.
  • A gray, off-white or busy background. The visa photo needs a plain white background with no border.
  • An old photo. Use one taken within the last 6 months.
  • Glasses that are thick-framed, tinted or reflective. Remove them or switch to clear, glare-free lenses.
  • A hat or headscarf without a religious reason. And even then, it must not cover your face.
  • Head tilted or turned too far. Keep rotation within 20 degrees left-right and 25 degrees up-down.
  • Editing or “beautifying” the photo. The photo must be unretouched — use a straight, unaltered photo.

Requirements can change — check the visa center, embassy or consulate handling your application, and the online visa application system if you are applying online, before you submit; they are the final authority.
