Need a Finland ID card photo online? The online application for a Finland ID card (henkilökortti) needs an electronic passport photo that is no more than 6 months old: exactly 500 × 653 px, saved as a JPEG of at most 250 KB. The file goes to the police photo server, which issues the photo code (kuvatunnus) you enter in your application.
Most people have the photo taken at a photo studio, which uploads it for them. You may also upload a photo you took yourself, but the Finnish Police do not recommend it: many self-uploaded photos are rejected. If you choose that route, IDPhotoBy formats the photo and you upload it yourself.
For the police photo server, the Finnish Police photo guide requires:
| Size | exactly 500 × 653 px — a deviation of even one pixel is not accepted |
| File | JPEG (not JPEG2000), .jpg or .jpeg, at most 250 KB, compressed as little as possible |
| Head | 445–500 px from the crown to the tip of the chin, not counting hair or beard |
| Space | 56–84 px above the crown, 96–124 px below the chin |
| Centring | face centre line at most 21 px from the photo's centre line |
| Colour | colour or black-and-white |
| Age | no more than 6 months old |
| Expression | neutral, mouth closed, eyes open |
| Background | light grey is best; plain, flat, light and neutral, without shadows |
| Editing | no manipulation that changes even small details of your appearance; no digital make-up |
You can get the photo code in two ways:
- At a photo studio — the usual route. The studio uploads your photo and sends you the code by text message or e-mail.
- By uploading your own photo to the police photo server at lupakuvienvastaanotto.fi, after logging in with Suomi.fi strong electronic identification.
You then fill in the online application and enter the code. Online, you can apply for a standard ID card, a minor's ID card without travel right or a foreigner's ID card, but not for a temporary ID card. The card is usually valid for 5 years.
IDPhotoBy crops and resizes your photo to 500 × 653 px, saves a JPEG within 250 KB and checks the background. It does not retouch your face, upload anything to the police photo server or give you a photo code, and it is not a photo studio. It makes no acceptance promise: the police assess the photo.
For a paper photo, see the Finland ID card photo (36 × 47 mm print) page. The same police photo guide also applies to passports: see the Finland passport online photo page.
Check the official application portal before submitting.
