• 4–6 mm above the crown — there must be at least 4 mm and no more than 6 mm of space above the top of your head.
• 7–9 mm below the chin — there must be at least 7 mm and no more than 9 mm of space below the tip of your chin.
• Light-grey background — a single, even, monochromatic light-grey background; the police state light grey is the best background colour.
• Black-and-white or colour — the photo may be either; both are accepted.
• Neutral expression — mouth closed and eyes open, looking straight at the camera.
