Need a passport size photo online for an Indian passport? Upload a recent portrait and IDPhotoBy resizes and crops it to the domestic Passport Seva print size — a 35×45 mm (4.5 cm × 3.5 cm) colour photo on a plain white background — with the India Passport Seva document already selected. It is free — no payment required.

This page is for the domestic India passport (Passport Seva, passportindia.gov.in), where the affixed photograph is 35×45 mm. The overseas route through an Indian mission or VFS centre uses a different, larger photo size — do not use this page for an overseas application.

Indian passport photo requirements (35×45 mm)

According to the Government of India Passport Seva requirements, your photograph must:

  • Be 35×45 mm (4.5 cm length × 3.5 cm width), portrait — not smaller than the box printed on the form.
  • Be in colour — no black-and-white photographs.
  • Have a plain white background, with your dress in a dark colour.
  • Show the full face, front view, eyes open — both edges of the face and both ears visible, head centred, full head from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin.
  • Have the face fill about 80–85% of the photo (Government of India ICAO photograph guidelines).
  • Show a natural expression — no grinning, frowning or raised eyebrows.
  • Avoid dark or coloured glasses; if you wear spectacles, avoid lens glare.
  • Have no distracting shadows on the face or background.
  • Use a head covering only for religious reasons, and only if the face and both edges stay visible.
  • Be a recent photograph that looks like you today.

Passport size photo dimensions and background

The printed passport size photo is 35×45 mm (4.5 cm × 3.5 cm), portrait, in colour. IDPhotoBy outputs a print-quality 35×45 mm image plus a printable A4 sheet for a photo lab. Some online Passport Seva steps also ask for a digital 630×810 px colour photo on white — that is the online-upload figure, while the 35×45 mm print is what you affix to a paper application.

How to make a free passport size photo online

  • Upload a recent, well-lit portrait — the India Passport Seva document is already selected.
  • IDPhotoBy resizes and crops it to the 35×45 mm passport size on the required plain white background.
  • Preview: check the head position, that the face fills roughly 80–85% of the frame, both ears show, and the background is clean white.
  • Download the finished photo, free, with a printable A4 sheet of copies.

The free passport size photo maker doubles as a resizer for the photo you already have.

Where the printed photo is needed — PSK vs DPC / SPC / CSC

Not every applicant needs a printed photo:

  • At a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK), a photograph is not required — it is captured on-site.
  • The affixed 35×45 mm print is required only at another collection centre: a District Passport Cell (DPC), an Authorized Speed Post Centre (SPC), or another Citizen Service Centre (CSC).

If your appointment is at a PSK/POPSK you can skip the print; for a DPC/SPC/CSC application, prepare the 35×45 mm photo here.

Printing your passport photo — photo paper, and do not sign it

When a printed photo is required, print quality matters. Print it on good-quality photo paper with a continuous-tone finish — an ordinary computer print on plain paper will not be accepted, so use a photo lab. And do not sign the photograph. IDPhotoBy gives you a print-ready file and an A4 sheet to take to the lab.

What IDPhotoBy does to your photo — and what it doesn't

IDPhotoBy sizes, crops and positions your uploaded photo to match the official 35×45 mm Passport Seva spec and places it on the required plain white background. It does not alter your face or change how you look — the Government of India requires the photograph to be unaltered by computer software, and a changed face can get an application rejected.

We make no acceptance promise — no online tool can. The file is prepared to the published requirements, and Passport Seva makes the final decision.

Passport photos for babies and infants

A baby or infant passport photo follows the same rules: 35×45 mm, plain white background, full face with both eyes open, natural expression and no shadows. Photograph the child against a plain white backdrop from directly in front, then let the tool crop it to size.
