Requesting a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) online? Upload your photo, and IDPhotoBy crops and resizes it to a 1350 × 1800 px JPEG for the NZeTA photo requirements of Immigration New Zealand (INZ). You request the NZeTA yourself.

NZeTA photo requirements

INZ's photo rules:

RuleINZ requirement
FormatJPG or JPEG
Pixels900 × 1200 to 2250 × 3000, portrait, 3:4
File size512 KB to 3.14 MB
  • Taken within the last 6 months.
  • Your face: 70% to 80% of the image, centred, with a clear gap around your head.
  • Looking straight at the camera: neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open.
  • A plain, light-coloured background, not white, with no shadows, people or objects.
  • Hair off your face and ears; head coverings only for religious or medical reasons, never over your mouth or the sides of your face.
  • Prescription glasses only with clear lenses, no heavy frames and no glare; no sunglasses.

No filters, beautification features or AI editing tools: INZ bans changing the colour, brightness, contrast or sharpness, cropping your head and shoulders to place it on a plain background, and digitally removing objects such as glasses. No photos of a photo, a passport or a screen.

Who takes your NZeTA photo: website or app

The official NZeTA website lets you upload a photo or use your device's camera. Have someone else take the photo: INZ accepts a selfie only in the NZeTA mobile app. Stand 0.5 metres from the background and, when saving, avoid options that reduce quality or limit the file size. The NZeTA is online-only, so no printed photo is used.

How to make your NZeTA photo online

  1. Upload a photo someone else took of you — the NZeTA is already selected.
  2. IDPhotoBy crops and resizes it to a 1350 × 1800 px JPEG made to fall within INZ's file-size range.
  3. Preview and download the JPEG, then upload it at the “Traveller photo” step.

What IDPhotoBy does — and what it doesn't

IDPhotoBy prepares the photo file, not the NZeTA request: it crops and resizes your photo and checks it, without retouching or beautifying your face. INZ says to use only the official website or app to apply, not unauthorised third-party services.

We can't promise your photo will be accepted. If the NZeTA website won't accept your photo, its form tells you how to fix it; INZ can review it manually if the system can't detect your face because of uncommon facial characteristics.

Who needs an NZeTA photo

Citizens of a visa waiver country or territory, cruise ship passengers and Australian permanent residents can use an NZeTA to travel to New Zealand without applying for a visa first; Australian citizens don't need one. On the website each person needs a separate request; the app handles up to 10 people at once. INZ uses your photo as biometric information, and you declare it is a true likeness of you.

Requirements can change, so check the official application portal, the NZeTA website, before submitting.
