Applying for your Polish ID card (dowód osobisty) online rather than in person? The online application uses a different photo file from the printed one — an electronic, digital image, at least 492×633 pixels, not a photo on paper. The photo rules for the ID card are set by the Ministry of the Interior and Administration (MSWiA) and published on gov.pl. The pose, background and expression rules are the same for both channels; only the file format and size differ. Check your photo against this list:
- Colour photo, electronic form — a colour image file, not a scan of a print, taken no earlier than 6 months before you apply.
- At least 492×633 pixels — the official rules state this as a minimum resolution, not a fixed size: a sharper photo at the same proportions is also accepted. Maximum file size 2.5 MB.
- Whole head and upper shoulders, your face taking up 70–80% of the photo.
- Plain white background — evenly lit, free of shadows and decorative elements, with only you in the frame.
- Face the camera straight on, head upright, no half-profile; the oval of your face visible.
- Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyebrows fully visible, eyes open and clearly visible with no red-eye.
- Ears don't need to show — your hairstyle can extend beyond the frame.
- No head covering and no dark-tinted glasses — a head covering worn for religious reasons is allowed with a certificate of religious-community membership, if the whole oval of your face and the line of your ears stay visible; dark glasses only with a disability or medical certificate.
- Corrective glasses allowed if your eyes stay clearly visible, the frames don't cover your eyebrows and the lenses don't reflect light.
Poland's ID card accepts your photo through two different channels, and they are not interchangeable files:

The 492×633 px figure is not an independent number — the official rules define it as keeping the same proportions as the 35×45 mm print photo. Unlike the Polish passport's online channel, which the same official source restricts to a child under 12, the ID card's online channel has no age qualifier stated in the rules — anyone applying online uses this electronic format.
One more thing worth knowing: since 1 January 2026, the online application itself is submitted only through Poland's national e-Delivery system (e-Doręczenia). That changes how you submit the application, not the photo file described above, which is unchanged on the same official page.
IDPhotoBy sizes and crops your photo to the official online-channel dimensions and checks the background against the required plain white. It does not retouch, beautify or otherwise edit your face — Poland requires a natural likeness with a natural skin tone, not an enhanced one.
We make no acceptance promise: no online tool can guarantee your photo will be accepted, and the authority reviewing your application makes the final decision. What you get is a photo correctly sized and cropped to the official electronic-application format.
