Applying for a Turkish passport (pasaport)? The biometric photo must be a specific 50×60 mm (5×6 cm) print — a fixed size set by the Nüfus ve Vatandaşlık İşleri Genel Müdürlüğü (NVI), Turkey's population and citizenship authority under the Ministry of Interior. Upload a recent, front-facing photo and IDPhotoBy crops and resizes it to this exact spec, on a plain white background, ready to bring to your appointment.

One thing to know before you start: the passport application itself is not something you can submit online. It has to be made in person — this page explains why, and what IDPhotoBy can (and can't) help with. The same 50×60 mm size and photo rules apply whether you are applying at a population directorate inside Turkey or at a Turkish consulate abroad.

Turkey passport photo requirements: size, background, and expression

These requirements come from NVI's own passport application instruction, corroborated by Turkish consulate guidance. Check your photo’s dimensions and other details against this list:

  • Size 50×60 mm (5×6 cm, about 1.97×2.36 inches) — a fixed print size, not a range.
  • Plain white background (#ffffff) — no pattern, no shadows.
  • Head height (chin to crown) 32–36 mm, ideally around 34 mm — measured from the bottom of your chin to the top of your head.
  • Neutral expression, mouth closed — no smiling, head upright and facing forward.
  • Eyes clearly open and visible — no colored or dark-tinted glasses that hide your eyes; clear prescription glasses are fine as long as they don't cause glare.
  • Taken within the last 6 months, showing your current appearance.
  • A genuine, high-resolution print — sharp enough for a clear scan; photocopied or computer-duplicated photos are explicitly rejected.

Even, natural lighting works best — avoid strong shadows across your face or reflections that could hide the outline of your head. The background must stay a single plain white, with nothing else in the frame.

Why the passport application must be made in person

Unlike some countries' passport renewals, Turkey's passport application cannot be completed online. NVI's own instruction is explicit: applications not made in person are not accepted, whatever the applicant's age. You can book an appointment online at a population directorate (nüfus müdürlüğü) inside Turkey, or at a Turkish consulate abroad — but the appointment itself only reserves a time slot for the required in-person visit.

At that appointment, the biometric photo is a physical print you hand to the application officer, who reviews it alongside your other documents and scans it into the system — it is not something you upload yourself. IDPhotoBy prepares that print (plus a digital copy you can use to check the crop before you go), sized and formatted to the 50×60 mm spec above; it does not submit anything to NVI or a consulate on your behalf. This in-person model is different from countries whose passport renewal happens by mail or through a fully online upload — plan to bring the printed photo, along with your other required documents, to the appointment itself.

How to prepare your Turkey passport photo with IDPhotoBy

  • Upload a recent, well-lit, front-facing photo — taken with a phone or camera, against any background — with the Turkey passport document already selected.
  • IDPhotoBy crops and resizes your photo to 50×60 mm, checks the plain white background, and frames your head to the 32–36 mm range.
  • Preview the result before you pay, then download the finished photo — a print-ready file sized for 50×60 mm output, plus a digital copy for your own records — ready to bring to your appointment.

You don't need special equipment for the source photo — a smartphone camera in daylight, held at eye level against a plain wall, works well. Avoid busy or colored backgrounds behind you; IDPhotoBy checks that the background matches the required plain white before you download.

What we check — and what we don't promise

IDPhotoBy crops and resizes your own photo to the official 50×60 mm size and checks the background against the required plain white — it does not retouch, beautify, or otherwise edit your face, and it does not generate or replace your background with an AI-created one. NVI's rule calls for a genuine, current likeness; an edited one works against you, not for you.

We also make no acceptance promise. No online tool can guarantee your photo will be accepted — the application officer at the population directorate or consulate makes that decision, not us. What you get is a photo correctly sized, cropped, and background-checked against the official spec.

Confirm the current requirements with your nüfus müdürlüğü or Turkish consulate before your appointment.
