Beyond these, the usual passport-photo habits apply — face the camera with a bare head and a neutral expression, and use a recently taken picture. Those are general good practice for any passport photo; the points in the table above are what the Vietnamese mission itself states. The mission does not publish a head-height measurement, a pixel size or a file format for the printed consular photo, so we don't invent one — if a figure isn't in the embassy's own instructions, it isn't on this page.
Vietnam has two different visa photos, and using the wrong one is the most common mistake:
- 2×2 inch (51×51 mm) printed photo — for the paper / sticker consular application you submit to a Vietnamese mission in the US, in person or by post for a loose-leaf visa. That is the photo this page makes.
- A different digital photo — for the online e-Visa uploaded to the National Electronic Visa portal. If you are applying online, you need that different photo instead: use our Vietnam e-Visa photo page.
So a 2×2 photo is not the size for the online e-Visa upload — the e-Visa asks for its own, different digital photo. The 2×2 in photo is a passport-style print for the consular counter. Applicants who do not already hold a visa-approval letter are usually directed to apply for the e-Visa instead.

The consular application wants two (2) identical 2×2 photos. On the Embassy's own visa application form, one photo is glued to the form and one additional photo is stapled to it for a loose-leaf visa request — which is why you print two identical copies.
You apply through a Vietnamese mission in the United States — the Embassy of Viet Nam in Washington, D.C. or a Consulate General (for example, San Francisco). You can apply in person at the Embassy (no appointment necessary) or online through the mission's consular portal for a loose-leaf paper visa that is mailed to your address. You hand in or post the printed application form together with the two photos, and the regular visa is issued as a sticker in your passport or as a loose-leaf paper visa. Either way the printed 2×2 photos travel with the paper form — the traditional consular channel, not the online e-Visa upload. Unlike the e-Visa, these paper routes (and older paper options such as visa on arrival) take a physical printed photo rather than an uploaded file. For US citizens and other applicants using a Vietnamese mission in the US, the Vietnam visa photo requirements are the same 2×2 in prints.
