Applying for a Japanese visa in mainland China through the Consulate-General of Japan in Shanghai (for applicants living in Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui or Jiangxi)? It accepts photos 45 mm high and 35–45 mm wide, so a square Japan visa photo 45x45 mm fits. IDPhotoBy crops and resizes your photo to 45 × 45 mm with a 27 ± 2 mm face, checks the background and gives you a printable sheet.
Check your mission first: the size depends on which Japanese mission handles your application, which is decided by where you live. The Embassy of Japan in Beijing and the Consulates-General in Guangzhou and Shenyang ask for 45 mm high × 35 mm wide, so this photo does not fit there.
| Japanese mission | Photo size it asks for | This 45 × 45 mm photo |
|---|
| Consulate-General in Shanghai | 45 mm high × 35–45 mm wide | Fits |
| Consulate-General in Chongqing | 4.5 × 4.5 cm in its general photo notice; 4.5 cm high × 3.5 cm wide on its visiting-relatives checklist | Check with your agency |
| Embassy in Beijing, Consulates-General in Guangzhou and Shenyang | 45 mm high × 35 mm wide | Does not fit |
The photo box on the visa application form is marked 45 mm × 35 mm. Check the size with your designated agency before printing.

A photo that clearly differs from your passport photo may have to be replaced.
The Shanghai Consulate-General lists as unsuitable: sunglasses that hide who you are, glare from the lighting on glasses, a wide headband covering the head, shadows on the face, a background too dark to make you out, and a fringe that hides your eyes.
Visa applications to the Shanghai Consulate-General go through agencies or travel agencies it designates, not online by the applicant, and the Embassy in Beijing accepts no individual applications. This photo is not for online submission.
On 19 June 2023 the Embassy in Beijing began issuing electronic visas for single-entry tourist stays of up to 30 days to Chinese passport holders living in China (excluding Hong Kong and Macau), but its tourist-visa document list still asks for an application form with your photo pasted on it. Mainland China is not on the JAPAN eVISA list of places. Applying via JAPAN eVISA from elsewhere, or via a Japanese mission in the US? See our Japan eVISA photo page or our Japan visa photo page for US applicants.
IDPhotoBy crops and resizes your photo and checks the background; it does not retouch, beautify or AI-edit your face or add filters. The Embassy in Beijing states that digitally processed or adjusted photos can't be submitted, so start from a clear photo and check the preview against your passport photo. We make no acceptance promise.
Requirements can change. Check the official requirements of the Japanese mission handling your application before submitting.
