According to Japan's official passport photo requirements — the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) / ICAO standard, mirrored by prefectural passport offices — your photo must meet the checklist below. These are the rules a Japanese passport photo has to satisfy, so compare your photo against them before you apply.
- Size 35×45 mm — 35 mm wide by 45 mm high (3.5×4.5 cm), and borderless (no border around the photo).
- Head 32–36 mm — measured from the top of the head (crown) to the chin. This is the official basis, not the "to the top of the hair" measurement some tools use.
- Plain white background — white is recommended, with no pattern, shadow or gradient.
- Full front view, applicant only, centred — face the camera straight on, with only you in the frame.
- Taken within the last 6 months — a current photo that looks like you today.
- Bareheaded — no hats, and no hairband.
- Colour or black-and-white — colour is recommended, and black-and-white is also accepted.
- Glasses off — removing your glasses is recommended.
These requirements follow the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recommendation.
The Japanese passport photo size is 35×45 mm — that is 3.5×4.5 cm, or about 1.38×1.77 inches. The frame is portrait (taller than it is wide) and has no border.
