The biometric photo for a Turkish driving licence (sürücü belgesi) is one printed photo, 50 × 60 mm, taken within the last 6 months. NVİ — the Nüfus ve Vatandaşlık İşleri Genel Müdürlüğü (General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs, Ministry of Interior) — issues the licence, and the new-type licence has been issued since 1 January 2016. The photo goes to your appointment as a print: it is not uploaded online.
NVİ’s driving licence FAQ asks for a biometric photo, taken within the last 6 months, that meets the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). NVİ pages and its driving licence instruction set out the details:
| Rule | Turkish driving licence photo |
|---|
| Size | 50 × 60 mm, printed — the biometric photo size NVİ pages list for the driving licence |
| Face height | 32–36 mm |
| Background | Plain white, without pattern or shadow; the NVİ instruction prefers mid-grey for light-coloured hair |
| Recency | Taken within the last 6 months |
| Pose and expression | Head upright and facing the camera; no smiling, mouth closed; eyes open and clearly visible |
| Glasses | No tinted glasses or sunglasses, no reflections on the lenses, and frames must not cover the eyes |
| Head covering | No hat or head covering, except accessories you must wear, such as glasses; in a headscarf photo, the face must be visible from chin to forehead |
| Copies | Photocopies and computer-duplicated, non-biometric photos are not accepted |
NVİ also asks applicants to remind photographers not to cut biometric photos down to 35 × 45 mm, so check that your print keeps the Turkish driving licence photo size of 50 × 60 mm.
You apply in person, by appointment booked through randevu.nvi.gov.tr, e-Devlet, NVİ Mobil or Alo 199. Applications are taken at 983 district population offices (nüfus müdürlüğü) and, since 15 February 2021, at Turkish embassies and consulates abroad.
NVİ’s FAQ lists one biometric photo among the documents. You hand the printed photo to the officer, who scans it into the system and gives it back to you, and your fingerprints are taken once, on site. The licence is then produced and delivered by PTT’s secure delivery service to the address you give when you apply. Some NVİ offices state that the photo is not needed if one taken in the last 6 months is already in the system, so check with your office before relying on it.
The same single photo is listed for a first licence, for adding a class, for renewal or replacement, and for exchanging a foreign driving licence. NVİ’s FAQ also mentions a health report (sağlık raporu) from a health facility authorised by the Ministry of Health, and a motor vehicle driver certificate, which you obtain by passing the driving exams.
- Take a photo against a plain, light-coloured wall, facing the camera, with your mouth closed and no hat or tinted glasses.
- Upload it — the “Turkey Driving licence 5x6 cm” document is already selected.
- IDPhotoBy sizes the photo to 50 × 60 mm, frames your face to 32–36 mm and checks the white background against NVİ’s criteria.
- Check the watermarked preview, then download the print-ready sheet and a digital copy for reference.
- Print your Turkish driving licence photo on photo paper at a photo shop, at actual size.
That is how you make your Turkish driving licence photo online; the appointment itself needs the print, not the digital copy.
IDPhotoBy sizes, crops and frames the photo you upload and checks the background against NVİ’s criteria; it does not retouch your face. No online service can promise that NVİ will accept a photo — the officer decides — so follow the rules above when you take the original.
